| — | Connect for Animals | Complete | $50,000 | — | May 24, 2024 | Which of your short term or long term goals did you achieve this year? We fully rebuilt and relaunched our platform. We expanded the platform to include new features beyond just events, including: (1) user profiles, (2) group pages, (3) group page management, (4) an initial version of points, and (5) an early prototype of the “actions” feature. We received 501(c)(3) status and ended our fiscal sponsorship with Humane America Animal Foundation. We grew our user base from ~350 subscribers to over 800, while maintaining strong engagement. 56% of users open our emails, and 10% of opens lead to a click. We have 50–100 people use our website per day, with Events data currently driving the majority of engagement (the full list of events, as well as individual events pages). We experimented with different marketing and advertising methods and gained valuable information about each approach, including: (1) outreach to nonprofit organizations, (2) outreach to VegFests, (3) getting Steven interviewed on podcasts, (4) using volunteers to reach out to local veg communities, (5) free Google For Nonprofits ads grant money from Google for search ads, (6) paid social media ads, and (7) more consistent posting on CFA social media accounts. For a longer narrative with more information, see the 2023 Work Narrative Report (attached as PDF). Were there any goals or milestones which you expected to achieve but did not? Why? We didn’t meet our user sign-up goals. This was partially because of the time invested in rebuilding and relaunching our platform, partially because of a difficult fundraising year, and partially because of not identifying marketing methods that drove as many sign-ups as desired. We also didn’t meet our goal of purposefully expanding the platform into other countries, partially because of the time invested in the rebuild, and partially because of the realization that getting greater traction in the US and Canada is probably a more important initial goal than expanding to other countries. The complete rebuild of our platform mid last year was a painful decision and a difficult process that took much time and effort, but it was ultimately the right move, and it has set us up for much faster development and growth in 2024 and future years. What are your goals for the upcoming year? Be specific and concrete. First, I want to acknowledge that as an innovative organization in "startup" mode, our growth is still highly uncertain, and so the specific numbers below are highly speculative. However, they are reasonable targets that would indicate significant traction and growth. Here are our goals for 2024: Increase Funding Goal: >$100,000 total funding and >$5,000 of that in individual donations. We think the majority of our funding will come from foundations this year, and we are committed to improving the strength of our application materials. However, we also plan on continuing to grow our base of individual supporters, predominantly through email appeals. Increase Organizational Capacity Goal: 1 product contractor; 1 marketing contractor; 20 volunteers; increased output from volunteer team; increase automation and AI. We believe that expert contractors are a powerful way for us to increase our organizational capacity, and we would like to hire part-time contractors for high-impact areas like product development and marketing. Additionally, we will continue to explore building our volunteer team. Automation and newer AI technologies (like the GPT API from OpenAI) remain powerful opportunities that we would like to more deeply integrate into our processes. Get More Users Goal: 2,000–10,000 total sign-ups, mostly in the US and Canada. At our current rate of growth, we will have over 1,300 sign-ups by the end of 2024. We think we can do better than this, growing our user base to at least 2,000 users. If this year goes well, we would love to be on our way to 10,000 total users by the end of 2024. Our goal is for at least half of these to be weekly active users. We currently have 226 sign-ups in Colorado. If we had that same rate of sign-ups across each state in the US (proportionally, based on population of each state), we would have 12,900 sign-ups in the US. If we had proportional sign-ups in Canada, that would be another 1,400 sign-ups from Canada, for a total of 14,300 sign-ups across the US and Canada. With the right marketing strategy, we think these numbers are feasible this year or next—and we think much greater sign-up numbers will be feasible in the coming years. From the experimentation we’ve done so far, these are the marketing ideas we think could be the most fruitful in 2024: (1) podcast interviews; (2) paid advertising; (3) word of mouth. We think organizational partnerships also have great potential, if we can find a good way to approach those. Additionally, novel marketing campaigns could be impactful, but we probably need help with their planning and execution and the impact of these is still unknown. We think it might be the most strategic approach to concentrate our focus on the US and Canada for now, in order to build up a critical mass of users and product traction here before expanding to other countries, especially since new countries will bring new challenges (language barrier, data privacy laws, cultural differences, etc). Create More Product Value Goal: More features, more engagement, and more word of mouth marketing. Our goal is for at least half of our users to be weekly active users, which would be one indicator of ongoing product value. We currently get a large percentage of our sign-ups from word of mouth, which seems to indicate existing product value, and we believe that increasing the value of our platform will increase our word of mouth marketing potential. When it comes to new features, we want to accomplish the following: (1) create a native mobile app; (2) expand the weekly Events Digest Newsletter to include actions, people, and more; (3) expand email notifications to drive user engagement; (4) nudge users through UX design and mobile notifications to engage more with the platform (take action, create profiles, attend events, etc.); (5) identify and develop other high-value features one at a time, such as in-app chat, the ability to favorite/follow organizations, etc. … See more information in our 2024 Strategic Plan (attached as document). Why is this work still an essential part of the way we reach animal liberation? Despite decades of vegan activism, the percentage of vegans doesn’t appear to have grown significantly. Despite decades of animal rights work, we are still far away from universal animal rights and ending animal exploitation. The buzz that the movement has generated has been substantial, and there are many people who care about animals and who try going vegan or who try volunteering in the movement. Most of those people, however, do not stick with their diet change and they do not take meaningful action for animals. After analyzing the animal rights movement and learning more about the difficulties of behavior change from social science researchers, we believe that an underlying cause of our slow progress is the lack of connective infrastructure to help supportive individuals get connected to the movement and stay connected to the movement. This was the conclusion I made when I started Connect For Animals in 2022, and the big-picture situation remains mostly the same today (although more efforts are being made to solve this problem). Conferences are a powerful means of connection, but they are only attended by a few hundred or thousand people. Mainstream social media platforms are full of noise and are not built for optimizing engagement with our movement. Nonprofit advocacy organizations are usually not incentivized to direct individuals to other “right fit” organizations if those individuals aren’t a good fit for their work, which probably leads to a great deal of unnecessary supporter turnover. We think there are at least tens or hundreds of thousands of these disconnected supporters people in the US alone, and potentially a couple million; and globally, there are many more. We think that most of these people do not currently connect to the movement in meaningful ways, and helping them connect could multiply the impact of the entire movement. Additionally, technology is becoming cheaper and easier to use and experiment with, which means now is an ideal time to bring the power of technology to the problem of lack of connective infrastructure. There are a multitude of effects that this work will have, from increasing the number of people who stay vegan, to increasing the total amount of advocacy happening, to increasing the flow of information throughout the movement so that the right people hear about the right opportunities, to increasing the amount of donations to organizations. If we want to significantly scale up the impact we’re able to have using the resources that we currently have, then we need to create infrastructure that gets people connected and involved in ways that are a good fit for them. If we want people to apply their skills in the most impactful way for animals, we need to create infrastructure that helps them discover the right organizations and advocacy for them. In addition to funding organizations working on specific initiatives, we think that funders also have a strong interest in supporting movement building orgs like Connect For Animals that aim to have a “multiplier effect” across the whole ecosystem of the movement. Why is this still the best use of yours (and your team's) time and talents? If we are even moderately successful at achieving our vision of finding, connecting, and empowering every person who wants to help end factory farming, then we will release an incredible amount of impact into the space. If we are fully successful, the movement will be transformed. Achieving success in this work requires a rare combination of technical knowledge, deep connection to the animal rights movement, an understanding of the social sciences, and a commitment to persisting through difficulties over a long period of time to build the solution. That is the combination that our founder Steven brings to this work. Additionally, we have built a strong team of advisors, consultants, and volunteers to help us advance this work. Although a small number of other people are exploring solutions in this space, their solutions are meaningfully different from the approach that Connect For Animals is taking, and I believe that we are still the best positioned to build the most robust, scalable solution to this problem (although I wholeheartedly support some of the other efforts that seem well-poised to solve other aspects of this same problem). Our team is also very efficient. Last year, we rebuilt our platform from scratch, developed new platform features, improved our internal data infrastructure, and achieved user growth and volunteer team growth on total revenue of about $40,000. Now that we have a stronger foundation and a faster velocity, right now is an especially good time for us to double down on this experiment and see what kind of results we can get from this approach. Have you secured other funding? No Please share any non-confidential details (e.g. amount secured, funding sources). We have not yet received other funding in 2024 (the "yes/no" button above was not working), but we will be applying to many other foundations and working on expanding our base of individual donors. We will be applying to other foundations and grant-makers this year, including: Animal Charity Evaluators Movement Grants; EA Animal Welfare Fund; Humane America Animal Foundation; The Navigation Fund; Mobius; Stray Dog Institute; Greenbaum Foundation; Craigslist Charitable Fund; Karuna Foundation; and Tipping Point Private Foundation. (We have previously received funding from Humane America Animal Foundation.) We are also developing an individual donor strategy, leveraging our email list and social media following to solicit donations. Our goal is to build a solid foundation of recurring monthly donors. (We have previously received around $1,000 donated from ~20 individual donors.) Finally, there are potential opportunities to get revenue through org sponsorships, advertising revenues, and merchandise sales that we can explore at some point in the future, although I’m not sure if these would make the list of priorities for 2024. |
